One of our core activities is our gigs. We run gigs every few weeks. Our current venue of choice is Richard Mully’s Basement Bar (Mully’s) in the Lewis building below the Huntley, often on Friday nights.

Some examples of gigs we try to run through the year:

  • Freshers’ Gig

  • Halloween Gig

  • Christmas Gig

  • Refreshers’ Gig

  • Valentine’s Gig

  • Leavers’ Gig

While Mully’s is currently our spiritual home, we try and have a selection of external gigs (sometimes called ‘Albanys’) where we bring the best and most varied talent from the Live Music Society to perform at London venues. Talent, groovy dancing & fun vibes. Covid has slightly changed the landscape of playing external gigs but we hope to pick them up again in the future.

Previous external gigs have been held at:

  • The Albany (our classic external venue)

  • The Dublin Castle

  • The Roadtrip and Workshop

  • The Troubadour

  • The Water Rats

Come join us and meet some new faces!

The Jam

We regularly hold Jam sessions where we chill in a room with some instruments and equipment - anyone can suggest a song and we play through the chord. Instrumentalists and vocalists alike are welcome!

Open Mics

Open Mic nights are usually run on an approximately fortnightly basis, and acts can range from soloists to full bands, covering many genres. All performers must be full paid members of UCL Live Music Society, but anybody can come and watch.

Want to perform but want a band to play with? Why not post on the Musicians' Noticeboard, or even turn up on the night and a committee member may be able to point you in the direction of someone who could accompany you.

Open Mics are also the perfect opportunity to hone those sound tech skills, or learn some new ones! Since the nights are informal, there's plenty of time to give beginners an opportunity to EQ an act with supervision, or for the slightly more advanced, an opportunity to practice mixing bands or setting up the stage. If you're interested in getting involved or having a go, be sure to make yourself known to a committee member and we can introduce you to the tech team, or get yourself along to an informal sound tech workshop during term time.

Print Rooms

Our Print Room gigs are stripped down and intimate sets of emerging UCL artists, that we run on a monthly basis. They provide our members with the opportunity to showcase original (or not!) music on campus and meet other musicians.

Keep an eye on our Facebook pages for more info on auditions.

Extravabandza

Extravabandza was started in 2018 as a Freshers’ event - a way of getting new talent into the society. It is unauditioned, so you sign up and are placed into a band with an existing member of the society as your musical director. After an hour or two of rehearsal in the week we run the event as a battle of the bands. The winning band gets to play a gig as a prize. This event happens early in Term 1 and in 2021/22 was rerun as a Refreshers’ event after Rhapsody.

It’s always great fun to watch or participate in so keep an eye out!

Battle of the bands

Our Battle of the Bands is an opportunity to bands to compete with each other and try and create the greatest experience for the audience. The winning prize is usually the opportunity to record an original songs at the Bloomsbury Sessions.
